WHERE IS ORGANIC COTTON FROM?
A large amount of organic cotton comes from India. The oldest documents for the cultivation of the cotton plant were found in India as well. Other cultivation countries are China, USA, Pakistan and some more.
Cotton is also growing in Europe, where Greece is the largest producer.
HOW CAN THEY HARVEST ORGANIC COTTON?
Cotton is basically obtained from the cotton bush. The tufts are harvested and then processed. If the cotton is packed by hand, the quality is better, since almost exclusively ripe tufts are harvested, while at machine harvesting overripe or not yet mature capsules are detected. Organic cotton isn't toxic in anyway.
IS CULTIVATION ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?
Although organic cotton has a high quality and is better tolerated by the skin than conventional cotton, nevertheless much water is needed. The amount needed for a t-shirt is up to 20,000 liters of water. It should also be important that the cotton is produced ecologically and that the water is not contaminated by chemicals, pesticides or other harmful substances, as well it´s important how cotton is treated in factories.
The colorful rivers, which are also used as a source of drinking water, may look interesting, but are anything but humane. If the cotton is naturally grown and controlled , there´s no harm for nature.
IS ORGANIC COTTON ALWAYS FAIR TRADED?
No, like everywhere else in the world, there are many black sheep here too. The Fairtrade Seal is surely a guarantee of quality, but even without Fairtrade Seals, it can all be decent. But there are enough scammers who are damaging the reputation of the organic sector. In India 2009/2010 a major scandal happened, with several manufacturers selling normal cotton as organic cotton to make more profit.
